The Bureau of Census Technologies Management Office (TMO) Software Testing Team (STT) is responsible for coordinating and conducting systems tests as well as release management of software. The STT began scheduling additional tests due to increased numbers of problems found in the applications supporting field representatives conducting telephone surveys. Additionally, the release process for the software deployed to field representatives’ laptops is a manual process and subject to user error. The Bureau required project management and subject matter expertise to streamline testing and release management programs and processes.
To address software testing improvements, InScope worked with stakeholders to incorporate two industry-standard processes, TPI (Test Process Improvement) and TMAP (Test Management Approach). TPI was used in a Rapid Results effort to provide quick fixes to process issues. It also prioritized a roadmap to deploy TMAP which is a set of test management disciplines, processes, and artifacts to raise the maturity level of the testing organization. For clear insight into software quality, InScope implemented TMAP, a cost-effective structured test process aimed at early detection of defects.
As a result of the improvements, the Bureau achieved streamlined, automated processes, improved communications and coordination between the business, development, and testing organizations.
